The
Cottage Cafe began in 1935 by a local construction firm known as J.J.
Masterson & Sons. Masterson quickly realized that he was no
“restaurant man” and hired Mary Hawthorne to manage the Cottage in
1938. Mary did a remarkable job and began the legend of homemade pies,
soups and goo-ole" American food.
There have been many changes over the years. In the fifties, the grill
was removed from behind the counter and an actual kitchen was
installed. The sixties saw new restrooms, but you had to go outside to
use them! The year 1980 brought a new owner and more seats to the
North, along with a cubby hole for an office and one of the best
improvements yet … indoor restrooms!
The Cottage was sold again this time to Ben & Wanda Goldie in 1986,
of course there were more changes in the air… more seats, modern
restrooms and our own in-house bakery. The Fireside Lounge was added in
1998 complete with a cozy rock fireplace and our now famous Bloody
Mary’s .. be sure not to miss it!
Most recently new flooring, booths, wall coverings, table tops and a
granite coffee counter have been installed … combined with new
landscaping our make-over is complete… all as a tribute to our valued
customers.
It was once said: “We cannot really own the Cottage, we are simply
caretakers.” Someday, we will be gone, but the Cottage will remain .. a
haven for hungry travelers, families and working people from all parts
of the country.
